'90 740 - 123k MILES - SHOULD I GET REBUILT ENGINE? 700 1990

I have a '90 740 wagon with 123K miles and the engine is going . .. confirmed by mechanic and mechanic and mechanic!!!! It's the bearing in the engine(it REALLY clanks when I first start it up and then it becomes quieter as time goes on). I can have a rebuilt engine for $3400 but some say do it (me) and others say don't (hubby). Mechanics say other things can go wrong: can malfunction because it can strain trannie and vice-versa due to differnt ages of pieces. Body in fabulous shape; I love my wagon(can haul so much in it); still saving for college funds for kids and don't want years of loan payments with a new car. I've already replaced the trannie, fuel pump, etc. (age typical fixes). Two mechanics questioned why the car only lasted for 123K miles when it's ALWAYS been mainted properly. Any ideas? I'll check back after all the football games are over . . . I'm a realist. Thank you.
