heater core 700 1988

I seem to have a leaky heater core.Anti-freeze smell,fogged windows.
My mechanic said around $700.00 to replace it.
Could someone let me know if this a reasonable price for this job.
Also with limited mechanical abilities is there any chance I should attempt to fix it myself? How difficult is it? The car is a 1988 740GLE. thanks for any help.Ken
