How to test for alternator to see if it bad ?? 200

My car is a 1987 240gl I have a volt meter at home..

how can I test to see if my alternator bad ??

by disconnecting the (possitive) battery cable when the motor is runing ?

or how can I test to see if the voltage regulator is going bad ??

car current system is . battery waring light glow sometime ...
