Sludge in air intake! 200 1991

Hello all. My wife's 91 240 quit running recently after a short spell of dying occassionally and then restarting. Today I went to replace the AMM with a used one, and when I got the old one out, I discovered quite a bit of a very liquid oily sludge in the hose on the engine side. The hose on the air cleaner side was clean and dry. The AMM switch didn't help, but I'm not sure the used one is good. It does start and run with the AMM disconnected. Any ideas?
