overdrive relay?? 200 1987

I have removed the OD relay behind the glove box. I did this because I need to replace it. The OD was off and would not come back on. The lighted arrow would not go off. I could hear the switch clicking but it was doing nothing. My question is.. Can I drive the car like this ? Is the OD on or off.Thanks in advance.
