I've noticed a new ticking noise from the auto-gearbox of my UK registered 760GLE (1987). It only occurs in drive at stand-still or when just taking off from stand-still - like as if it's only when the clutch is slipping (if it were a manual, if you see what i mean). The rate of the ticking varies with engine speed and when above 10mph or so, the noise disappears and the car drives normally.
A local "gearbox specialist" suggested it might be the drive plate, but i've no idea what this part it or how easy it is to replace. I phoned my local Volvo dealer, but they had no idea what a "drive plate" was and so couldn't provide me with a price. They also wanted to know the part number of the gearbox on this model (which i would have thought they would be able to work out for themselves, but apparently not).
I'm therefore looking for answers to the following:
1. has anyone else experienced this ticking noise and found out what it was?
2. What is the drive plate and how can i describe it to my local dealer?
3. What model or type of auto gearbox should be fitted to this model?
Many thanks to anyone that can help this first time posting!
Cheers
Peter
