Broken Spring or Stuck Valve? 700

From describing the symptoms (see "Help ! Car making loud knock!", below) to my mechanic he thinks it is a broken spring. From searching the archives my problem seems like a stuck valve caused in part by fuel sytem cleaner. I will remove the valve cover when I get to work and crank it over with coil disconnected to observe if all the springs and valves are actuating. I know a valve spring can be replaced without removing the head, but can a valve be unstuck without removing the head? Is there any way to know if the valve has contacted the piston? (740t, 133K).
