roof rack 700 1987

hey all, i have a 1987 760 wagon with factory roof rack. im getting it repainted and need to remove rack to treat some rust. when the car is done being painted the rack is NOT going on again, im planning to weld the holes, is there anything i should watch out for when removing the rack, and instructions or tips, (could not find any in FAQ)
