brakelights just died... 200 1986

My brakelights have worked perfectly since March of 2001 when they died for a few days and then came back on by themselves. Today, I noticed they're out again. The taillights, turn signals, etc. all work fine. It's just the brakelights that don't work. Is this a problem in the pedal area or what? I don't think it's a bulb problem. Can anyone help...much appreciated.
