1981 242 non-turbo K-Jet: I tried to test the two fuel pumps according to the Tech Tip in the latest IPD brochure because I'm still trying to figure out where the humming noise is coming from in my car.
The IPD advice is to remove the pre-pump fuse at the fuse box and attach the meter leads in place of the fuse. Start the car measure the draw in amps. It should draw 1-2 amps. When I run this test with the meter set on the 10-amp-max scale, the meter shows no amps being drawn. When I set the meter to the mA scale which measures up to 400mAmps it maxes out.
When I try to measure the amps being drawn for the main fuel pump by removing its fuse and hooking the leads in place of the fuse, the car won't start. It's supposed to draw 9.5 amps.
Can anyone help me figure out what all this means? I'd really like to isolate which pump is causing the humming noise and fix it.
