740's 700

My family has a long line and Volvo 240 ownership, however today i went and test drove a 85 744Gle. It seemed a lot more refined and had a lot of power options compared to our 240's. Plus the guy has gone through over the last 5 years and replaced lots of stuff; Headliner, exhaust system, clutch, repainted (cheaply), and 90 dollar seat covers. Its a manual and im used to driving auto's but i like the control of a stick. He wants $1985 for it and it seeems like a good deal. The only problem is it needs new rear shocks. Are these the famed Nivomat's? How much would that cost to repair. Should i buy this car?
