Oil All Over My Alternator Side of Engine = No oil in filter 200

I have a 1990 Volvo Sta. Wgn with the B230B engine. Just recently after a short trip of less than 2 miles I noticed what appeared to be smoke coming form under the hood. When I lifted the hood I noticed oil that had been sprayed around the engine but a heavier concentration around the alternator side. The smoke was the oil burning on the header. I thought it was the oil filter so I installed a new one and took it for a short drive. Same problem showed up. I checked oil level, which indicated full and at the same time looked for water in the oil of which I could not detect any. Oil cap was on tightly and no oil was coming from that area. When I removed the oil filter, it had pressure on it but the filter was basically dry. Normally when I change the filter it is full of oil, not this time. I am totally lost as to the problem and looking for help from the experts or anyone else that has experienced the same problem. I suspect a malfuncting oil pump but not sure. Appreciate any advice. Thanks
