Air box pre-heat system on 740 turbo,is it really needed or better without it?Cool intake better? 700 1989

Have read some articles on the pros and cons of a "cool air system" for cars and I know that on a turbo it is critical that no engine compartment air should enter the air intake for any lenthy periods after warm up or mass airflow sensors fry and detonation could occur;so a cone air filter would have to be routed outside the engine compartment. So why did the factory have that thermostat in the air box(most malfunction after time)and is it really needed on a turbo engine, even in freezing weather? Can I just remove it and run dual cool air intakes to the airbox via the knockout behind the right side headlight?
