what are the signs of a leaky or broken head gasket, and what's a head gasket? 700 1987

i have a bad smoking problem with my car which only starts when the car reaches operating temp (temp gauge gets vertical). my dad thought maybe a leaky or broken head gasket might be to blame. but what is a head gasket, could it be related at all, and if it is, how would i fix it (or at least how much will i expect to pay)?
