Front end work 200 1986

Hey everybody,
I`m about to undertake redoing the front end bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends,Calipers, rotors, new brake lines, sway links and wheel bearings.A question I have is while doing the ball joints, can I compress the springs by jacking up the lower control arm or do I need a spring compressor?
Looked at my haynes manual they say I can do the former, but once under the car spraying B`Laster on frozen part fasteners, I`m thinking the latter.
I have plenty of time to do this job as I can get around by bus and its the first time I`m doing a job of this magnitude.Love working in the freezing cold, don`t you?
Anyway,I`d say I`m prepared against the elements and toolwise except a spring compressor. Also is there any particular order to do this job?
So all you front end Phd`s,any input would be helpful.Thanks.

Yours in chattering teeth and busted knuckles,
