Could this be the flame trap? 200 1987

I just recently cleaned out the flame trap on my buddy's 240. This morning he noticed that there was a lot of oil sprayed around the oil cap and on the valve cover. Prioir to this, the car sat for 4 weeks, it was started every now and then for charging the battery. Its been very cold recently, and I am wondering if the oil deposits in the flame trap solidified??? What else should I check?
