Valve absorber/valve stem seal replacement?

From the FAQ it appears that when replacing the valve absorbers that the cam is removed but there is no need for the valve spring compressor. Is this correct. If I measure the valve clearance then remove the cam will I be able to adjust the shims with no valve compressor?
