760 GLE Auto Transmission Info required 700 1990

Hello folks,

Found this forum last night and spent many hours reading!! Loads of useful info!!

Can anybody please tell me if my diagnostics are correct? I have owned 1990 760 GLE 2.8 V6 Auto for the past 6 months (my first Volvo). I think it has the AW71 auto box. I have the "Overdrive" switch on the side of the shift and when depressed, makes the box shift down and allows the revs to climb without shifting up, therefore allowing overtaking on motorways etc without altering throttle position (also lights the up-arrow indicator on the dash).

On reading the FAQ about the box, I discovered that it supposedly has 4 speeds, is this correct? I have P-R-N-D-2-1 as selection options on the shift, and I am sure I've only ever felt the box shift 2 times when accelerating. I sat in the car this morning and on pressing the Overdrive button (which I considered to be a "Sport" mode rather than my definition of "overdrive"!) I can hear the click mentioned in the FAQ. This leads me to assume that the electrical relay and the wiring from the shift are OK.

Now to the main question!! Can anyone tell me the average revs for this configuration in 4th gear? At 70mph with a fairly neutral throttle pressure I have about 3000 rpm on the tacho. Is this right for 3rd gear, indicating that it's not selecting 4th or "overdrive" gear, in which case the solenoid on the box itself is at fault? (as according to the FAQ)

As you can imagine I am getting horrendous fuel consumption figures since I do a fair amount of motorway driving!!

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Thanks!
