Little yellow cap fall off MY car? 200 1982

My son has been driving his 1982 242 for a couple of months without the splash pan. While bolting on a new one, we find a yellow, plastic cap wedged in a cross member under the motor. It is about 3/4 inch in diameter and has 1/2 inch of threads. Sort of a slot on top. I have never seen it before. The question is --- did this fall off of this car or did it bounce up off the road?
