I got some very helpful info off this board. Now we will have to wait and see if the car is really fixed.

I have a 92 740 (nonturbo) wagon, 96k miles, that has developed a very intermittent stalling problem. Can be OK for 2 weeks, then might stall while under load (cruising at 35 mph, for example). It will often stall a second time shortly after the first stall, but then might not stall again for a week. The nature of this problem made it impossible for the dealer to diagnose. They left the car running for an hour and it didn't stall, so they couldn't suggest anything! (At least they didn't charge me for this diagnosis)

I researched the problem on this board, and came up with the possible bad fuel pump relay. Frankly, without the simple instructions on this board I don't think I could have figured out how to remove the little storage box to access the relays (Instructions were: "Take off the pop-on cigarette lighter cover, remove the two screws holding the storage box and pull the box out." perfect! )

I got the fuel pump relay ($18+ from Volvopartsdirect.com ) and now I will have to drive the car for a few weeks, maybe even a month, to see if it stalls or not.

Any thoughts on my problem? One question I still have is why would a bad fuel pump relay cause an intermittent stalling problem? I guess I do not understand the function of the fuel pump relay. Seems to me it should either run or not run, but I dont understand why you would get an occasional interruption of fuel to the engine.. Thanks, MJ
