Front Seal Repair Complexity 90' 240 200

Our 90' 240 DL Wagon has a leak (bad) in the front or rear engine seal. A Volvo shop estimated $300.00 to do the front and $500.00 for the rear. They are not sure which is bad because there is so much oil sprayed underneath the frame it's hard to tell. I would like to do it myself to save the $ and for the experience. I was told if it's the rear I have to drop the transmission, which I've never done. How big a deal is either? Most importantly how much time for a slow inexperienced DIY'er? I have a big garage but it's about 20 degrees out consistently and I know it will be a pain. Any suggestions?
