Cheap speaker replacement in factory mount 200 1992

If you've got a late model 240 (1991?-93) with the 5 1/2" speakers in the projected hex enclosures, I found a true bargain basement source--740 speakers.

It's not that they're so much better--but if your speakers are starting to buzz out, and you want to keep the factory look, you've already found that aftermarket speakers don't have that not-QUITE-square mounting tabs on the factory units.

While I was in the local PNP checking out a 1989 740 for a backup computer, I got curious about the speaker in the door right next to me. The cover looked like the one in my 1992 except not hex. So I popped it off and Hey! that speaker looks like it might fit.

They're exactly the same depth from the mounts that the 200 speakers do. They have the same mounting pattern. They sound oh, somewhat cleaner than the originals. You'll have to twink with the spade connectors, maybe cope out the cutout in the door panel (but it's concealed by the enclosure). Piece of cake if you have a nibbler. I was able to make do with some wire cutters. The voice coil projects a bit, so make sure your grille isn't dented in to where it interferes. The hex cover snaps right back on.

For $6.25 each side, it's hard to lose.

Good luck.

Doug Harvey
