shock screwup 700

Two weeks ago, I installed new Boge strut inserts on the front of our 91 740 (the backs are next). All was well for several days an I was impressed with the "new" ride. Several days ago, the car developed a slight thump I guess is the best word and obviously in the area of the right front. It's especially evident driving 5 mph and going over a minor bump. I thought at first I'd left a tool or something loose up front that was moving around going over the bumps but I've looked well and nothing. Now the noise is louder and the wheel is obviously not getting the dampening effect of the shock as a minor bump jars your teeth. I've been through the FAQ and now think the noise is that of a shock attached at the top but not under load and is banging around it the strut tube. Is my most likely problem that I misplaced or dislodged the spacer in the bottom of the strut tube that the shock rests on? I didn't notice anything adhering to the bottom of the old shock when I pulled it out but if it were there, I've thrown it away. Anyway, I'll pull it apart tomorrow and have a look inside. Does anyone know if this spacer (if I did throw it away) is available as a single part or am I gona have to go to the junkyard. I gather that this spacer also has an "up" and "down" side and it possibly flipped over on me or I simply reversed something during reassembly. Any suggestions appreciated!
