Hey guys (and girls?),
I have an ongoing problem with my Canadian 91 744T M46. Car has 160 K km, which is just under 100k miles I believe. Car died suddenly while driving, with loss of power and no throttle response. Then it started and ran fine down the highway to another destination. After start-up at second destination, car died again after a minute or so, and would barely start and run. Finally it started and ran fine, so I drove it on the highway to the dealer, without incident, where it died as I pulled in! They diagnosed a clogged fuel filter, and replaced it. Car was good as new for a month, and started doing it again. The car would lose throttle response momentarily and bog down, then run fine. Or car would die and barely run, and after pulling over and cranking and barely starting, the problem would go away.
It started this morning and idled fine for a few minutes, then it died, and will not run very well at all unless you keep your foot in it. Sputters and coughs and stumbles, then dies near idle. Car has no power, and is not drivable.
I have resoldered the fuel pump relay, which seemed to help a little, but it did not cure the problem. I can hear the fuel pump, but not sure which one or both is running. The car has no error codes at all on the OBD for fuel or ignition. It did not last time it was at the dealer either.
Car I was told when purchased has new AMM, and I was told new fuel pump, but that might be the tank pump. Overall car is well cared for.
I'm thinking fuel relate, and maybe clogged filter again, or main pump, but not sure. I use 92 octane gas from one supplier, which may be of some concern. Can not find a radio surpression relay to resolder. Could also be ignition side cutting out? Strange that it runs like new for a while, then like total crap! Maybe TPS? But no error codes?
I love this car, but need it to be reliable. Will have it towed to dealer on Monday if cannot fix over the weekend.
Any insight greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any replies.
Sorry for long message, just wanted to provide all the facts!
