HELP!! Need advice, good or bad 200

OK, I need some help on this one. My '81 (Now at 250K+) drives like a dream until it bucks, almost sounds like detonation rattling, and generally loses power. Sometimes she dies, and I can throw her in neutral and restart. Other times she just puts alone until suddenly, VVRRROOOOOOOOOMMM, she's off again, like a bat outa' hell like there was never anything wrong. I thought fuel starvation and replaced fuel filter, main pump and in tank pump. Is not helping. Figured maybe ignition replaced rotor and cap and coil, will do wires this week when I can find new ones. On the last test drive, I noticed some wild tach swinging, it spiked to about 4.5K and then rapidly swung down to 1.3, engine was not following, couldn't have dropped revs that fast. Think it could be the engine wiring harness? The wacky electrical tach makes me suspect. Anyway, any suggestions or musings?
