Tranmission Replacement Opinions 700 1987

I need to replace my AW-71 auto transmission. This will be the second time (car has 340,000 miles). I have heard of all the bad experiences people have had with replacing the ATF fluid, killing the seals and the transimssion. The question that I am faced with is I would really like to just take my chances with a used transmission, and just top off, or replace the ATF. Or would I be better off getting used transmission, droping the cash on a rebuilding it(probably just clutch plates, and seals).

BTW if you have done the later, how much have people been paying on just seals and clutch plates?
