1981 242: I have one of the inner tie rods off my car and have a question about reinstallation. On this car, where the tie rod connects to the rack and pinion shaft, the inner tie rod end just threads over the steering rack shaft. There are no lock washers of any kind. The only thing that was holding the old one from working loose was a 3/8 inch "stake" or crimp on the edge of the inner tie rod end. A 3/8 inch section of the circumference of the inner tie rod end, along the edge closest to the rack, was crimped down into a depression on the steering shaft. I can see how it would be easy to crimp the new one if the rack were on the bench, but it's not. It's on the car. So how do I crimp the thing when the rack is installed? Is there a special tool for this? I also plan to use blue Loctite (medium strength) on the threads. Does this sound like a good way to approach it? This is the first one I've done.
