Several years ago the cone clutch bearing in the OD of my wife's 745T started making noise. I bought an entire used transmission just for the overdrive unit, and installed the OD on the recently overhauled M46. I kept the cast iron case M46 because I can't throw good parts away. No wonder I have a lot of clutter!
The once overhauled M46 started making some bearing noise in third gear, and first gear syncromesh was giving the wife some trouble, so I replaced the once overhauled M46 with the good spare. The fourth gear switch was intermittent, and the reverse gear switch stuck on once the transmission was in service. It is tough to get those switches out without lowering the transmission. I cut off a Craftsman 7/8" deep socket to 1-13/16" length. The shortened socket will go on the switches in place with the 3/8" drive flex handle. A 3/8" ratchet handle will not fit in the space without lowering the transmission, I tried it. The deep socket must be a cheap one with the hex going all the way down to the end of the socket. The better deep sockets (like Snap-On and Mac) have only a short internal hex in them.
