240 trans linkage 200

I have a 1989 240, with automatic trans.

The gear is stuck in reverse, yet the shifter moves freely through the shift pattern.( no resistance)

It feels as though the shifter has come disconnected from the linkage. I have not yet taken anything apart.

Is this a common problem?...Any advice on where I should begin my diagnosis? Thanks.
