Cleaning Exterior Locks 900

Just a dumb question about cleaning locks.
The lock on the rear lid of my 940 wagon (I hesitate to say "froze") wouldn't turn clockwise, so I couldn't unlock the lid. Even though ambient was below 32F, I think it was the accumulation of salt and other metro grime (Chicago area) that jammed it. I battled frustration for a few weeks and didn't use WD-40 of other petro lubricant, but I'm wondering if just using graphite is enough (the temp is above freezing now and it again turns) or does it need cleaning, and how best to do that. Thanks.
