Strut Retaining Nut 200 1990

I just tried to tighten the retaining nut (it was loose and clunking) and it appears as if the internal threads are stripped. The nut turns gets tight and then slips and is loose again with the same three threads showing each turn.

Now what? Re-thread the strut assembly? Help please. Thanks.
