add 12 volts overdrive to 6 volts elctric system 120-130 1961

Hi Guys,
Yes I'm from abroad and seeking advise/experience.
My P 1200 6 volts from '61 is in the proces of being updated with an overdrive.
This was a factory accessory (M31 & D-type overdrive)
My question is: can I use the 12volts solenoide on my 6 volts electrical system or do I need a voltage adapter
(from 6 to 12 volts) to have it operate properly.
Since the 6 volts is very rare in N-America I'm not sure if any of you encoutered this problem.....

Hope to hear from you, even better.....solutions are desperately wanted.....
