I just bought a 90 740 GLE wagon. On the way home the trans started to slip. I did manage to drive the car for about 2 weeks before it got too bad. In that 2 weeks I really got to like the car. My question is, what model used trans am I looking for and do the different asian warner gearboxes interchange? The trans in the car is the model 072L automatic with the overdrive button on the side of the shifter. Also, everything that I have read seems to indicate that the major reason that these transmissions go bad is due to a bad radiator allowing coolant into the gearbox. Just to be safe I was thinking of adding a seperate external trans cooler and bypassing the radiator altogether. Are there any problems with this mod? Or is it ok? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, the reason that I ask about the different transmissions is that I cant seem to locate another 072L in my area (SE Pa) so any help in finding a good used trans would also be appreciated. Thanks!!
