dumb alternators--probable causes of failure? 200 1986

So last night I drove to my hockey game and the car was fine. this is after having spent many hours this weekend fixing the sheetmetal below the headlights which the bottom of the horns bolt into...lots of fibreglass because of rust and holes. anyways, so when i get in the car to leave, the battery light kinda flashed, but didn't stay on until a few seconds later when it came on weakly and i could tell the car wasn't charging and the voltmeter was at the top of the bottom red line. It was strange, especially since the car was fine the whole drive over. Luckily, the drive home was only about 4 or 5 minutes from there, so I got home ok. My question is--does this sound like wiring issues, brushes, or just a bad alternator? Any suggestions would help a lot in terms of the time i'll have to spend fixing this in the death cold up here in Waterloo, Ontario. Thanks yet again for any help!
