? 100amp alternator in a 1980 240?

Hello all: I'm finding that my 600 watts of lights and powerfull stereo are pulling too much juice for my stock alternator to keep up. Has anyone out there put in a 100 amp alternator? I've heard this can be hard on the wires. Can I use one from a more modern 240?
