Door Seam Rust 900

I have some rust at the door seams of my '93 945T. This issue is well documented in the FAQ, but there are no remedies mentioned. It looks like I may have to strip the "putty" out of the seam in order to clean & seal it. Has anyone had any experience and/or luck in this area?
