What purpose/function do these serve?

I installed a clutch & rear main seal last weekend, marked and replaced the flywheel in exactly the same position I found it. Decided to check position per Bentley - my indicator pins are 90-degrees out from the diagram. This is the second clutch replacement for this brick. Local Volvo mechanic did the first in '92; haven't noticed any problems in the 175K miles since.
