Ball joint replacement when replacing strut inserts? 700 1988

I thought I had posted this yesterday but it must have gone out the dissipation gate.

Anyway, I'll be replacing shocks and strut inserts soon and would like to know if the ball joints can be removed or separated without damage, or should I plan on replacing them?
