AC fan on in this weather? 200 1992

The morning commute began at -4F this morning, reaching about 10F by the time I got to work. Exited the car and heard my AC pusher fan running! Tried the ignition key on and off a few cycles, but it kept running. I disconnected its connector so I would have some battery left at the end of the day, but I'm mystified as to what happened to cause it to kick on. AC is most definitely turned off at the instrument panel.

My manuals are out on loan. Any ideas as to what may have happened?
