I finished removing the broken B230FT this afternoon. I was able to remove the last two bolts holding the torque convertor to the drive plate using a 17mm ratcheting box end wrench of Gear Wrench brand. The picture below shows the hole in the right side of the block.

The cylinder was cracked be the flying parts.

For the sake of my curiosity I removed the pan and crankshaft. I can't tell what went first. I did note the hose connecting to the wastegate actuator was broken when I pulled the engine. This engine could have been overboosted lots of times, depending on the setting of the boost overpressure switch, that is if the hose to the inside of the car was even connected. Yes, that is a 9mm connecting rod. Those were used until very early in the 1989 model year production.

The crankshaft has minimal damage. A little scoring on two main journals, and one conterweight showing some beating. It should be magnafluxed for cracks, and if okay, turned undersize and returned to service. The intermediate shaft had a three inch piece broken out of it. There may have been a few chips of metal pumped into the oil galleys before the intermediate shaft was broken and the oil pump stopped turning as the engine spun down.
