Question About Connecting Rods 700 1989

I recently read a post where John S spoke of the new connecting rod's in the 89 model year, this has interested me, and spurd a question, when you say the 89 model year are you speaking of that being the year they built and then they sold in 90? or are you saying in 88 they built them and they sold in 89? also whats a good way to tell? thanks
