Preservative for rubber and plastic? 200 1992

Is there anything that I can put on exposed rubber and plastic parts to keep them from drying out and cracking apart? The notorious window sill scrapers and radiator hoses (including the little PITAs at the firewall) and intake bellows and padded dash and even bumper covers would all last longer, I'm sure, if they were treated with the right preservative occasionally--if there is such a "right" treatment.

In the past I've experimented with high-viscosity silicone lubricant. It does make rubber and plastic *look* renewed. But I also recall someone on the board mentioning, in a thread on some other subject, don't use silicone on rubber.

Does anyone have the straight skinny on this?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Doug Harvey
