Gas Tank Removal-Filler Pipe 200 1988

I'm currently attempting to drop the gas tank in order to either fix/replace. Removing the tank from the car hasn't been too bad (ie. weight of tank is resting on blocks), but either disconnecting the filler from the tank or from the car seems to have a trick to it. Is there something I'm missing? Should I be tearing up the carpets/trim to get at something? It's a wagon, if it makes a difference. Thanks for any suggestions or ideas.
