A/C or Turbo Noise? 900 1995

My '95 945T makes a THPPFFT sound about every 5 to ten seconds when the A/C is on at freeway speeds. The noise is just loud enough to hear at that speed. I've only had the car a few months and ran the A/C during the last warm spell here in LA. My wife asked what that Noise was and I tried to sound intelligent by saying its normal. My question is is that normal?
