engine temp rising during hill climbs 900

I have a 95 960 with 120k miles, and in driving it for a year i've never seen the temperature gauge above the middle. just recently while driving in the mountains i noticed the temperature gauge rising steadily towards red during a longer climb. i slowed way down and cranked the heater, and this brought the gauge back down. i had to keep the heater on the whole climb in order to keep it down. this happened consistenly on every hill climb during the trip. when driving around town and on flat highway the temperature stays normal. the car was full with five people and gear, but i've done that before with no problems. also, the air temperature was pretty cold, below 15 degrees. any ideas what needs to be fixed?
