Anti-freeze fluid 700 1991

Hi: I keep reading on the forum that one shouldn't use anything but Volvo anti-freeze fluid. Does this apply to Volvo OEM rads only or to the jobbers also?
Is the fluid just superior(longevity, better anti-corrosion properties)?
