I was getting a clacking sound out of my left strut. Not real high pitched, and not a deep thunk. Definitely sounded metal to metal. Finally, after checking and tightening everything in sight and more, I paid a good mechanic to trace the sound with an electronic stethoscope. The noise was emanating from inside the left strut tower. Les Schwab Tire Company honored their warranty and replaced both struts which were only 1 year old. Now I'm starting to get the same sound again just 30 miles after the replacement struts were installed. This time it's coming from the right side. Same sound, other side. Everything else has been checked for looseness. The noise is related to up and down movement of the wheel. It doesn't seem to be related to turning or braking. It comes from inside the strut tower somewhere. Sounds like a looseness in the system that causes metal to whack metal when the right wheel hits small sharp bumps, like entering a driveway, for example. Any ideas so I can be more knowledgeable when I go back to the alignment shop for another replacement?
