shifting problem, I've read the FAQ to no advail, please help!!!!! 700 1990

Hi, I'm new to the world of "bricks" and I'm having trouble with my newly acquired 1990 740 Turbo. The problem is as follows, the shifter itself will move into every gear placement(reverse, neutral, drive...and so on) but it is not physically going into gear, the car is currently not running but has power and I'm trying to restore it. Being that I do not have a tow truck with the sliders to pull the car up onto a truck bed, I am having to use a flatbed trailer that is made for hauling cars and I need to get it in gear to hoist it up onto the traler. It seems that this problem is similar to the "micro switch" going bad, if the microswitch goes out, will the shifter be able to freely move into all gear placements and still physically remain in park? Thanks in advance for any/all information and pointers you can supply me with.
