My dauthters 1988 240 sedan apparently died a suddenly with out any signs of revival. It does kick once when you try first time in the morning. I figure that's from fuel condensation overnight.
Anyway I have a few questions that maybe someone out there can help me with.
First off I checked the voltage to the fuel pump confirming 12v during cranking (it's not runnning). That checked ok. The pump itself "thumps" when the car is cranked, feels like it's frozen. So, I 'm pretty sure the pumps dead.
Next, I checked the voltage across the pre-pump fuse(#4). It also read 12v during cranking. This tells me that the drelay must be functioning ok. But the harness at the prepump isn't producing any voltage during cranking. I had assumed that once fuse 4 was activated, it was a straight shot back to the prepump. The wiring isn't what I expected either. There's the r-y and grey clip (with ground wire) that's apparently for the sensor (I checked by disconnecting and watching the gauge drop) and blue and black wires with single connectors which I can only presume are the pump wires. I was expecting r-y wires for the pump. Any no voltage. Is there a junction for the prepump wires downstream of the fuse? Where is it? And why are the wire colors not what are shown in the wiring diagram? The wires look original. Is there another relay (that may be bad) designated just for the pre-pump?
The pre-pump appears dead also (probably been that way for awhile). I applied 12v to the pump leads and nada.
Have I overlooked anything? It looks like I need a new pump and pre-pump
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. Should I buy a new relay while dsreplacing the other components? thanks John
