Is IPD OD rebuild kit the way to go for a failing M46 OD? 700 1985

My OD has now gone to not engaging at all. Up till recently I could get by with the OD by having it work first couple of times and if it didnt engage it would eventually pop in. Now it is not engaging. So is the rebuild a job for the average do it yourselfer? I have read the manual and it doesnt look like anything too complicated other than seperating from the transmission while in the car.
